Buildings kept for their own sake: an old palace, a manor, a tower floor, a hotel on a mountain shelf. What puts a hotel here is that the fabric of the building sets the routes, and the routes decide how often guests are in the same room. Places that merely hang pictures in a lobby are not included.

Guests reach the garden from all four sides of the building, so the courtyard becomes the point every route passes. The main door, the desk and the corridors to the dining rooms sit on one level, close enough that a walk to breakfast crosses the same ground as a walk to the street.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Higher up, the corridors run long and each wing keeps its own stretch of doors. The rooftop level sits above the guest floors rather than beside the garden, and it is reached by lift, so people arrive there in ones and twos. Deliveries and staff use routes drawn behind the rooms.

An eleventh-century palace on a cliff where terraces do the work of corridors
WHERE PATHS CROSS
Arrival puts everyone on the same upper terrace, because the road ends there and the building steps down from it. The cloister, the belvedere and the pool sit on a short chain of levels, and the stairs linking them are the only continuous route, so guests meet on the way to almost anything.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Bedrooms are cut into thick old walls on separate levels, and several open straight onto their own stretch of terrace. The gardens run far enough along the ridge that two parties can spend an afternoon out of sight of each other. A lift shortens the climb for anyone avoiding the stairs.

The site is steep and the surface is old stone, so plan for stairs between the terraces and pack shoes for them.

The Upper House

A hotel that begins high in a tower and is entered only by lift
WHERE PATHS CROSS
Everyone passes through one lift lobby, since the ground floor holds nothing else and the guest levels begin far above the street. The lounge, the restaurant and the desk share a single upper floor, and that floor is where arrivals, meals and departures all overlap during the day.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Above that floor the rooms sit on long single-corridor levels served by a small number of lifts. Because the lift is the only link, people move in short separate loads rather than in a stream. The garden terrace sits off the main level and stays out of the walking route.

Entry depends on lifts from the street podium, so allow time at the ground-floor lobby when you arrive with luggage.

A 1900s hotel on a mountain shelf above the lake with a single front door
WHERE PATHS CROSS
One entrance serves the whole building, and the hall behind it opens on the salon, the dining room and the stairs. The terrace faces the lake and takes the afternoon, so people gather along its rail. With the road ending at the door, arrivals and departures happen in front of everyone sitting outside.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Room floors sit above the public rooms and are reached by a narrow stair and one lift. The spa is set into the slope below, on its own level with its own entrance, which pulls a share of guests out of the upper rooms for hours at a time.

A SINGLE LINE
A nineteenth-century estate house with newer wings spread across a vineyard slope
WHERE PATHS CROSS
Meals and reception stay inside the old manor, so the estate pulls its guests back to one building several times a day. The terrace in front of it looks over the river and holds the tables, the bar and the route to the gardens, which puts most outdoor walking through the same few metres.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Newer accommodation stands apart from the manor across the slope, joined by paths rather than corridors, and some of it has its own parking. The vineyard rows are wide enough that walking between blocks rarely brings two parties together. The spa sits below the house on a separate level.

Paths between the buildings are outdoor and sloped, so consider the walk from your block to dinner after dark.

A terraced building beside the bay whose upper deck is open to every guest
WHERE PATHS CROSS
The roof level is shared, and it holds the pool, the bar and the widest view, so it draws the building upward in the evening. Lifts run from the entrance to that deck without a change, and the ground floor keeps the desk and the way to the promenade in one small space.
WHERE THEY DO NOT
Bedroom levels step back as the building rises, giving many rooms a private stretch of terrace facing the water. The spa occupies a lower floor with its own reception, and the parking level feeds the lifts directly, so some guests move between car and room without crossing the public floors.
