The corridor, the concourse, the lift bank and the road in. The gaming floor is not described and not judged.

Four resorts in Canada, read by the same measure as every other page here: which spaces everyone passes through, and what the plan does to keep people apart. What matters for this guide is the corridor, the concourse, the lift bank and the road in.

Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.

11Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada

Montreal Casino & Hotel

A SINGLE LINE

Expo pavilions on a river island joined into one building on several levels

WHERE PATHS CROSS

Four linked pavilions feed a single central core, and the escalators inside it are the way between levels, so movement concentrates there. Arriving by road or shuttle puts everyone at the same entrance, since the island has one approach. Restaurants and the performance room open off that core rather than off the street.

WHERE THEY DO NOT

Levels are stacked, and each holds a different set of rooms, so a guest with one destination rarely walks past the others. The island keeps the parking apart from the entrance by some distance. Performances empty at set times, which sends that audience out while other floors carry on.

TAKE CARE OF THIS

The island is reached by bridge or shuttle, so check how you will get back late in the evening.

12Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Fallsview Casino Resort

A SINGLE LINE

A resort built into the gorge slope where every level looks toward the same water

WHERE PATHS CROSS

Escalators from the street entrance climb through a tall central hall, and that hall is where the hotel, the theatre and the restaurants all begin. Because the building is set into a slope, arriving on foot from the town and arriving from the car park both end in the same space.

WHERE THEY DO NOT

The hotel tower stands above the public levels with its own lift bank, which lets guests reach rooms without recrossing the hall. Dining rooms face the water along one edge, drawing people to a single side. The theatre has its own doors and fills and empties on its own schedule.

TAKE CARE OF THIS

The site is steep and much of it is indoors on several levels, so allow time to move between them.

13Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

River Rock Casino Resort

A SINGLE LINE

A riverside resort near Vancouver with its own jetty and a hall for concerts

WHERE PATHS CROSS

A long concourse runs the length of the ground floor and connects the hotel desk, the restaurants and the show hall, so a walk from any door to any other passes through it. The jetty and the airport shuttle both arrive at that side, which puts most travellers on the same route in.

WHERE THEY DO NOT

Guest rooms sit in a block set back from the concourse with a separate entrance for people arriving by car. The show hall is entered directly from the parking side, so concert audiences need not cross the hotel at all. The spa keeps its own quiet floor away from the main run.

TAKE CARE OF THIS

Flights pass close by and shuttles run on their own timetable, so confirm the pickup point before travelling.

14Rama, Ontario, Canada

Casino Rama Resort

A SINGLE LINE

A lakeside resort on Chippewas of Rama First Nation land with a concert hall

WHERE PATHS CROSS

The concert hall sits inside the resort rather than beside it, so audience nights fill the shared corridors that also lead to the restaurants and the hotel desk. There is one main road in, and the entrance canopy takes coaches, cars and hotel arrivals at the same point.

WHERE THEY DO NOT

Away from those corridors the site spreads out, with the golf course, the spa and the lake edge each some distance apart. Room floors are reached by lifts set back from the public rooms. On nights without a show the long corridors carry very few people at once.

TAKE CARE OF THIS

The resort sits well outside the nearest town, so plan how you will travel to and from it.

Meeting people and avoiding them are both things a plan can be built to do, and neither one is the better hotel. What follows is our own wording of material published elsewhere, and the month printed inside a card is the month we last read that material.
